Whale Tongs

Whale Tongs
Media: Copper
Dimensions LxWxH: 12.25x.5x5 inches
Date Completed: Fall 2013
This work is a pair of tongs I created for a jewelry class. Following my interests I wanted it to be capable of being manipulated by a mechanism. The device works using your thumb on the wheel, you can roll the wheel which allows the jaws of the tongs to open and close depending on position. The inspiration of the shape came from one of an old flint lock pistol . Everyone turns the piece upside down and says it resembles a whale. This piece speaks about my fascination with developing a cumbersome solution to a straight forward task.
